the scented breeze

of deepest love.

Such beautiful language. This has a wonderfully atmospheric and haunting quality. You don't know till the end who is speaking and so it's a mystery which makes your mind weave through all the possiblities of who and where and when. On a re-read, each beat has an extra pull of anguish. But for some reason, my mind refused to see this as post-Grey Havens. Instead it happened for me in a dream that Sam was having in Ithilien after they had been brought back by the eagles. He thinks they're dead and his heart seeks in dreams for his master, not knowing he is lying next to him. Maybe it was the dream-like quality (and that I'm feeling fluffy today).
