I don't think there is something I loathe more than the question "Why can you not just enjoy it" - it speaks of total lack of understanding from the lover (who appears selfish), and I know Sam would understand. At least a little. He's at least not selfish. This questioning is only found between lovers who do not share a deep connection, but Frodo and Sam share such a connection, Sam has been there and *knows* why Frodo "cannot lean back". Their love is not something set apart from their trials - they grew *together*. Perhaps this questioning is the first sign that they are de-phazed somehow, they're in a moment of alienation from each other; but what I'm trying to say is that love itself will find you even when you are down, and will not expect you to be joyful and go back to what was before. It will accept to grow with you and follow you wherever, and it will trust that even if you act differently, it's still you inside and you don't need to pretend to be happy.

It *is* possible, he always gives it in such a way. That's why it's said that true lovers have heaven (Valinor represents Nature). Even if Frodo becomes "self-absorbed" as you wrote here, it doesn't mean far away from Sam, because like I said, their connection is shared within, so no matter how far inside one goes, the other is there too.
But perhaps they are yet to learn that...
